Diana Ross (born Diane Ross; March 26, 1944 in Detroit, USA) is a hugely influential American singer who helped shape the 1960s Motown Sound as lead singer of The Supremes but lost her bottle from the penalty spot.

In 1994, the USA was chosen to host the World Cup even though just 16 enthusiasts regularly played the sport in the country at the time.

FIFA's hand was forced after they announced that the tournament needed to take place in North or South America and every other nation was either too poor or corrupt to step up.

There was precious little enthusiasm for the football side of the competition, but the opening ceremony was planned meticulously with the intention of giving a flavour of American razzmatazz and dwarfing Italy's 1990 extravaganza which saw a sweaty man on a moped leer at several women in the crowd while a group of African immigrants tried to sell knock-off handbags.

At the climax of the evening, a warbling Ross was supposed to score a penalty kick, causing the goal to collapse. However, the occasion seemed to get to the soul sensation and she dragged her kick wide.

A devastated Ross left the pitch in tears being consoled by Italian star Roberto Baggio, who had coached her in the build-up to the game on how to take the perfect penalty. Ross has never taken a spot kick since.
