Jimmy Armfield[]

Jimmy Armfield OBE (born 21 September 1935 in Denton, Lancashire) is a former England captain and veteran broadcaster who now summarises on Radio Five Live.

His key characteristic as a summariser is to preface almost every comment by saying ‘I saw what ‘appened’: particularly when his fellow commentator has expressed any level of doubt.

Armfield is also quick to assess an individual’s level of guilt when an incident stops play, normally employing his other catchphrase, ‘he did it quite deliberately’.

E.g. Alan Green: Well, someone’s gone down in the centre circle, I’m not entirely sure what…

Armfield: I saw what ‘appened. Smith has caught Armstrong full in the face. Deliberately. He did it quite deliberately.
